Discussion:
KDE (and other things) very slow since last update

Hi,
I've upgrade yesterday with lastest KDE packages, and now KDE start and each
application start is very very slow...
Even for a simple 'kwrite' start, the CPU goes 100% for ~15 seconds, then 5
seconds of 'inactivity' (cpu usage ~2%), then the window opens.
If I close it, and restart it just after, the same.
I tried it just after starting KDE (very long to start...), and memory usage
still low (=> no swap used).

Before this update, all was working very fine with packages version 3.5.0-3,
and now, with the 3.5.0-5, all KDE stuff is very slow.

I don't use to use gnome, so I can't tell if it is only a problem of KDE or
more generally.

It may also comes from the X upgrade (6.9.0-4 -> 6.9.0-8)...
I didn't upgrade the kernel, which still a 2.6.12-12mdk

Are other users have same problems?

Fred

the problem is with leafnode. i run cooker. u need to upgrade
leafnode.
i just did a search for leafnode in cooker and installed leafnode.
that fixed me up, hope it works for u.

Hi Patrick,
nope, leafnode doesn't solve (and I don't see why it could, it is not at all
related!)
Did you upgrade something else at the same time?

i am using cooker. when i installed u did all the updates
then i added urpmi to cooker.
i noticed that both of my cpu's , i have an x2 were running
at 100 percent as i would attempt to load web pages.

one of them running 100 percent is normal as it is running
folding at home.

i entered top
in a konsole and i got that kio was running at 100 percent.

i searched for kio in install software and found nothing,
then i read about kio and it seems that leafnode is connected
to kio somehow. i installed leafnod and one or two other
programs that popped up.

i dont that problem anymore.

maybe u have to have the leaf node that is in cooker , not just
one that is there but not in cooker.

let me know

Ok, I found the problem and the solution:
I removed all the ~/.fonts.* , and now, it's fast again.
I run cooker for years, and I think an old package config was interfering with
a new version...

So, if anybody has big slowdown at each X application start (if xclock takes
40 seconds to load!), have a look at your .xsession-errors, see if there are
logs about fonts.dir, and if yes, try removing your ~/.fonts.* files and
directories.
