i did a fresh install of mandriva 2006. then i got
sources from easy urpmi. then i did

auto--select --allow-force.

then i rebooted everything was fine.

the reason i reinstalled was because my evga 7800gtx
didnt have a driver in 2006 but it is in the 8178 driver.

then i went and deleted my sources and set them
back up in cooker.

then i downloaded the 2.6-17 and 16 kernels.

then i rebooted into them

then i got 8178 driver and dksms and installed them.

everything works fine. i then set my resolution
to 1600x1200 and went off on the internet and
played armagetron.

then my isp died at some point and i rebooted my
machine. i have NO BOOT LOADER.

it seems that if u are using 16 x 1200 resolution
and u reboot u have nothing to boot from

i put the dvd in and tried to rescue to no avail.

didnt work at all.

then i reinstalled and went through all these
changes again and then changed the resolution to
anything but 16 x 1200 and everything is fine.

i then , and i must be a glutton for punishment ,
put my resolution at 16x 1200 and rebooted
and again no boot loader.

this is apparantly a bug..

hope this helps.

if u want to test it just set your resolution at 1600
x 1200 and u wont be able to boot back into
mandriva again.

i have rebooted several times and as long as 16 x
1200 is not being used my machine works fine.

and in any of my resolutions i am getting glx gears
of 15300. not bad.

Thanks for taking notice. It's a relief to hear that I am not the only
one in pain. You are of course perfectly right. Only, I have not been
able to configure my X700 1600X1200 card under any combination of
identities, monitors and resolutions. All I got for my pains were error
messages. And the updated final xorg-6.9.0 packages made matters even
worse.

What I did not mention was that the 64bit version failed to form a
détente with other peripherals, like sound card and on-board NIC. The
crazy thing was that the skies cleared and all zoomed along once I
downgraded to the 32bit version of 2006. Which suggests that the porting
of basic packages from 32 to 64 bits is less straightforward than I had
hoped.
